Acting Principal News

Dear parents and whānau

Kia ora koutou

A very warm welcome back to you all. As our Principal, Jason Pocock is currently on sabbatical, I am in the Acting Principal role for the next 3 weeks.

I hope you had a lovely break with your whānau over the holiday period and managed to spend some quality time with family and friends.

We have begun the term strongly this week and have plenty of exciting things coming up.

I would like to take a moment to introduce some special new people to our Kura. David Sinclair has started his tenure with us and is in Room 2, part of the wonderful Matai team. Tiffany Song has also started this week and will be our new Japanese kaiako, taking over from Yasuko Okamura, who has become a mum. We all wish Yasuko all the best and will no doubt see her again soon with her new addition. We are very fortunate to have Harry Williams return to our ANI whānau. Harry was a teacher aide at our kura and is currently completing his post-graduate diploma to become a fully-fledged teacher. Harry also coaches our school Water Polo team and will attend AIMS with the squad later in the term.

We have a large Korean tour group from Cheongwon Elementary School joining us for the next 3 weeks. They are immersed across our kura and as an IB school, it is a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect with other cultures and be global citizens. Our school production rehearsals are well underway and “The Addams Family” is set to be a huge hit. A massive nod to the efforts of Blake Wilson, Maddie Brodie and their awesome crew of staff and students for the mahi they dedicate to this. The shows are in Week 4, beginning with a Tuesday matinee for our local schools, then 3 evening shows beginning at 6.00pm. Be sure to get your tickets early, as you won’t want to miss this!! Tickets are available on our school Kindo Shop.

Sports and dance teams, along with some individual sports persons are busy training in preparation for attending the AIMS games later this term in Tauranga. This year we have 127 students competing in the week-long tournament, the biggest of its kind in Australasia. 18 Dedicated staff members will attend this event in the capacities of coaches, managers, drivers and chaperones.

If you have been in school recently, you may have noticed a few changes. All school buildings have now been completely repainted, with contractors readying to move inside to begin working on the interior. This is in alignment with further improvements such as Autex wall coverings which will be installed later in the year. The ongoing works are all part of our 5-year property plan, which is due to be completed by the beginning of 2025.

Recently, we were lucky enough to secure funding from grant applications that have resulted in 2 new installations at ANI. The first one is the installation of netting around the shade sail area in the Y7 quad. This is to protect buildings and windows from sports and balls that are used in that space. The second grant was used to have 4 reversible netball/basketball goals installed on our court area, providing more opportunities for our tamariki and community to use both while at school and out of hours. A thank you to our PTA for providing some additional funding for these projects to have them completed.

And finally, I would like to share a whakatauki (a Maori proverb) that resonates with me about life at ANI.

“Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi engari he toa takitini”, meaning “Success is not the work of an individual, but the work of many”.

Have a great weekend whānau

Kia haumaru te noho

Deputy Principal’s News

Attendance

Kia ora, e te whānau,

Welcome back to term three from Ashley, Scott & Kieran. Today’s DP news is an important note about our attendance and lateness procedures which have been refreshed.

As a school, we are committed to ensuring the highest attainable attendance rates and to support the academic progress and well-being of all our students. Minor disruptions to attendance or repeated patterns of lateness are shown to have a huge impact on the learning and development of ākonga in schools. Our students crave routine and we often hear from parents about the importance of preparing our students for their next school and onwards. We couldn’t agree more and ask that our whānau support these routines by ensuring their young person is at school as much as possible and on time.

Did you know that lateness of a mere 10 minutes a day can add up to a total of 5 full days missing across the school year? These first 10 minutes are crucial for our students to set themselves up for success in the day. Our Deans have been analysing our lateness recently and you will be contacted by your young person’s classroom teacher if there is a concerning pattern.

In the refresh of our procedures, there are a few key things to note on the following topics:

  • Justifying absences and our required follow-up as per the Ministry
  • Overseas Trip procedures and follow-up
  • What follow-up from the school office you can expect from daily absences
  • Procedures on students arriving late or leaving early and what is required of whānau
  • School requirements on truancy

Please click through to our website to see our refreshed attendance procedures.

We expect our whānau to be familiar with them and to adhere to these expectations as best as possible.

Enjoy the beginning of the term!

Nga mihi

ANI Alumni visit from Germany

At the Year 8 end-of-term 2 assembly, a very special guest and ANI Alumni, Andrew Pegler, visited ANI with his family all the way from Germany.

Andrew attended ANI from 1984 until 1985 and is now the Head of Humanities at Kama International Bilingual School and kindly shared some wonderful photos of his classes and one of the old buildings before it was demolished.

Andrew awarded the Premier Pins and was then given a tour of ANI led by students from our German Club.

He sent this lovely email after his visit:

It was wonderful to meet you in person yesterday and a great experience, not just seeing the school but getting to see the school in action!

Thank you so much for arranging that.

Please thank Jason from me again for his time and especially to Selina for providing two fantastic guides. They were an absolute tribute to the school and I really appreciated the tour and the chance to talk to them.

If there is anything I can do to help in future please let me know. Now have a great end of term and an excellent holiday!

My old classroom looked in great shape for a 40 year old…

Sustainability

Pest Monitoring at Windmill Park

Our Sustainability Team spent time with our local park ranger learning about animal and plant pests. We are helping the ranger to find out which pests are present in our local park. We spread peanut butter into 6 monitoring traps around the park and we’ll collect them after 4 days.

We will then identify the pests from the footprints they leave in the trap. We also spent some time learning about some of the plant pests in the park. Once we could identify them we set about removing some of them. Well done team and thank you for caring for our community

A message from our SENCo:

Launch of New Literacy Support Program

Launch of New Literacy Support Program

We are thrilled to announce that starting on Monday of Week 2, we will be launching our new Literacy Support Program. Our dedicated team of teacher aides has been diligently researching and evaluating various structured literacy programs. From this, they have developed a comprehensive program tailored specifically to support our ANI students.

What is Structured Literacy?

Structured literacy is an approach to reading instruction that is systematic, explicit, and cumulative. It focuses on teaching the foundational skills of reading, including phonology, sound-symbol association, syllable instruction, morphology, syntax, and semantics. This method is especially effective for students with reading difficulties, as it provides clear, direct instruction and practice in a logical sequence.

Selected students will receive 3-4 sessions per week, with the aim of accelerating their progress in literacy. We are confident that this new initiative will greatly benefit our students and enhance their learning experience.
