ANI Guild – Issue #7

Ani Guild Issue 7

The Shattering Performance!

ANI received a mind-blowing performance from Auckland Grammar School that was out of the world! Their performance was outstanding with music groups such as the wind band, bagpipes, orchestra, rock band, choir, and the development orchestra performing right before our eyes. But before anything else, let’s go right back to when it started.

On a beautiful, sunny afternoon, our school was puzzled when 3 buses arrived at our school. Believe it or not, Auckland Grammar had come to showcase their amazing music groups which they have been practising for a long time. Once the lunch bell rang, everyone was buzzing, filled with excitement to see what was going to happen.

Everyone waited in silence, coming into the MPS, one class at a time until it stopped and one of the bands started to play. It was the bagpipe band who introduced the start of an outstanding performance ahead of us. They played wonderfully and once they finished, everyone was shocked but there was MUCH more to come.

Up next was a very handsome man who stood up and interacted with us, the audience. He introduced himself and told us what was to come today. Everyone was amazed that there were so many performances. Then he invited the choir which sounded angelical. Everyone, still in awe, waited patiently for another group to come, the orchestra.

Everyone, still in awe, waited eagerly for the orchestra. It was filled with violins, violins and VIOLINS! Let me tell you all, THAT PERFORMANCE WAS PHENOMENAL! The violins started off with a spectacular intro then followed by the amazing soloist playing the flute. It was mesmerizing. Then came the piano. After that the orchestra started playing their piece.

Towards the end of their performance, the applause lifted the roof! Their precision was amazing and nobody knew who was playing what and once they finished, they ended off with a big BANG. Everybody loved their performance and they got a massive round of applause from us.

Next up was the wind band group. They played fabulously. After them, we had a development orchestra who wanted to showcase their skills. It sounded amazing even though they were just learning how to play!

Lastly, came along the rock band. Their drum and player started them off with a powerful performance. Then came the 2 electric guitar players who also showcased their abilities. After that, all the musicians started playing and the host started singing. His voice was incredible. Then a saxophone player blew everyone’s minds. He soloed one part and he went CRAZY! Everyone was amazed at how he could play for so long without taking a break. Once he finished everyone gave him a huge round of applause.

Once the rock band was finished we all said a big thank you to them for coming to us and showing us what their musical groups are. Once everyone came out of the MPS, all everyone could talk about was how well they played!

Thank you so much Auckland Grammar for coming to our school! You guys were amazing and we really enjoyed it. We hope to get this opportunity again. This is the ANI Guild signing out!

Korean Students Come to Town

On the first day of school this term, we were lucky enough to have a cultural exchange with Korean students coming from Cheongwon Elementary School in Seoul, South Korea. 29 students joined our school for a Korean cultural exchange.

Cheongwon Elementary is a school in Seoul, the beautiful capital of South Korea. With its towering buildings, the exchange students must have had quite the surprise in Auckland! In Seoul, the exchange students had come to ANI in the middle of their summer holidays, while we were braving the cold snap of winter. One of Seoul’s best known landmarks is Namsan Seoul Tower, an amazing structure with million-dollar views!

Of course, when you travel to a different country, you are bound to discover other cultures. One example is the exchange group. A lot of different sports and lunchtime games have emerged with the Korean exchange students! The already relatively common sight of basketball has changed to matches all over the courts, even more football, but also a small number of Korean schoolyard games! Everywhere we have seen the blue and green uniform, there is guaranteed to be an activity much better than tag!

Totara’s Terrific Assembly

We had a grand assembly this Monday presented to us by our very own Totara team. Totara is one of the Y7 teams, with hub Tahi and hub Rua. Six classes in total. Four MCs led the assembly: Kayla, Leo, Hailey, and Callum (rooms 26, 25, 30, & 28), running the show this week.

We also had Snowey and Sia (rooms 27 and 29) to tell the school about the amazing debate at the United Nations that they had last term. There’s a whole article on that below, so be sure to have a read of that!

There were teachers giving out housepoint coupons and lots of students sat up straight the second it was announced. Everyone wanted those house points! Some students definitely deserved those house points.

Later on in the assembly, there were 3 certificates given out. The first two were chess certificates, and the last one was a missed principal certificate from last term. The chess certificates were for Amarah and Fiona, rooms 26 and 19. The principal’s award was for Fatima, room 6.

After that was announced, we had Ms. Hodder come up on stage to lead the school in a song—Sweet Caroline.  Although some of the students were reluctant to sing, most of the school did anyway, so that wasn’t a problem. But everyone DEFINITELY burst out of their lungs during the chorus!

Sure, the assembly was shorter than some, but it was a great opportunity for students other than the student leaders to have a chance at addressing the whole school. They all did a great job, and this promises more team assemblies in the future—from both Y8 and Y7 teams. It will definitely be amazing to see.

The Great Debate

Y7 General Assembly

The MPS hummed with energy at 10:30am as Selene Q and Gunnar S took on the roles of presidents for the Great Debate, with Elsa D serving as the vice president.

One hundred and eighty students from Totara, all dressed in formal attire, eagerly took their seats, awaiting the arrival of the remaining participants. The United Nations assembly for the Totara team’s term 2 inquiry task focused on International Waste, specifically exploring the proposal of a waste tax for countries that exported waste overseas. The assembly mimicked the structure of the United Nations, with representatives from different “countries” and hosted by presidents and vice presidents.

State groups, categorised by regions such as Africa, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe, presented progress reports on developments made since the last general assembly, with a focus on economic, educational, and political advancements. Subsequently, the presidents inaugurated the assembly, and the debates commenced, leading to frantic note-passing and remarkable speeches that built up the tension until the time came for the vote.

The voting process unfolded as the presidents called out each country to voice their stance on the topic, and after the votes were cast, they were tallied up. 17 countries voted in favour, 38 voted against, rejecting the proposed waste tax, with one country abstaining from voting. Overall, the assembly provided valuable insights into the global issue of waste management, fostering critical thinking and meaningful discussions among the students.

In conclusion, the United Nations Assembly for the Term 2 inquiry task provided an avenue for insightful discussions on International Waste. The engagement and enthusiasm displayed by the Year 7 students from Totara demonstrated their dedication to addressing real-world issues through collaborative and diplomatic approaches.

The Refreshing Rapturous Renovation

Term 3 started with everyone rushing to the school gates ecstatic to start a new term here at ANI. As soon as the students approached the courts, where almost all the basketball enthusiasts play against each other at lunch, they were greeted with new and improved hoops installed. The buildings around the school were repainted and looked outstandingly fresh. But first, let’s go back into term 2 to see what was happening.

It all started back in term 2 when some painters had parked in our staff parking. We were all puzzled as to why these people were here. Once they started taking their equipment out, we knew what was happening. Our school was going to get repainted! Everyone was excited, wondering how it was going to look at the end. Nobody could stop thinking about it. They had worked throughout the day making our school look fresh and good as new.

Towards the end of the term, some professionals came to our school to drill 4 holes on our courts. Everyone was bewildered. Why were there 4 holes in our courts? Then we received the outstanding news that we were getting 4 new reversible netball/basketball hoops. It started to make sense now. Our school was getting a renovation! We were all excited for the hoops, especially the basketball and netball players.

Once term 3 started, everyone was excited to see the school repainted and brand new hoops for our basketballs to swish through. Everyone was so excited to play on these new hoops and when morning tea came around, everyone rushed to play on them. We would all like to say a big thank you to all of you who have made our school look brand new. Without you, our school would not be looking as fresh, fun and fabulous. Who knows what could be next?

Meet the press!

Cici G

Hi, I’m Cici from Hub Tahi and I’m 11 years old. It’s a pleasure to join the most hardworking group in ANI — the ANI Guild!

I have only been to NZ for 2 years and I got chosen to be a journalist in this group! That makes me more confident in writing.

I like to draw in my free time, and I’m good at piano. I’m up to grade 8 already and I’m almost taking the exam! I just learned violin a few months ago and I’m already a little bit good at it because of my piano skills!!!

I’ve started to learn 5 languages — English, Chinese, Japanese, German and Maori (maybe Korean). I’m very fluent in English and Chinese, and a little fluent in Japanese.

My dream job is to be an architect which needs a lot of writing skills and communication skills which the ANI Guild helped me a lot with.

I always like to write stories from everything I see, that’s why I have an interest in ANI Media.
