Dear parents and whānau

Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa (talks of the importance of staying connected and maintaining relationships)

Welcome back to Term 4! As we embark on the final stretch of the year, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the busy and exciting term ahead. With so many important events and milestones on the calendar, it’s set to be a whirlwind of activities that will engage and stimulate our students to ensure that they thrive all the way through to December 13. The whakatauki I used above talks of staying connected and maintaining relationships and as we traverse this busy term and it’s important that we work hard on staying connected and supporting each other to be better.

This term is full of highlights, including the Eden Albert Choir Festival, where our students will have the chance to shine in front of a wider community. We also have Athletics Day, which is always a fantastic opportunity to celebrate participation, achievement, and school spirit.

Our Enrolment Kōrero sessions will see us connecting with new whānau, while the Exhibition will give our year 8 students the chance to showcase the incredible learning they’ve done this year. Let’s continue to foster the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from these significant events.

We also have the EPRO8 finals to look forward to, where our teams will demonstrate their creativity and problem-solving skills, and, of course, the much-anticipated Pool Day and Amazing Race will provide students with some well-earned fun and opportunities to develop teamwork and resilience.

As we prepare for Graduation and the important transition work for our Year 8s, I know many families will be exposed to young men and women that are a little anxious. Please know that the community of ANI wants to support them. Whether it be their Home room teacher, dean, SLT or Chloe our counselor. Please use the resources that we have at our disposal to help you and them continue to be successful through this stage of their life.

On top of all of this, the usual Central Zone sports continue, with our students representing the school and striving to do their best.

I also wanted to make you aware of the Staff Only Day that we are observing on Friday 25 October. There has been much said in the media and by politicians around these days moving forward and I just wanted to take this time to communicate why these are so important. These days allow staff to engage in focused training, explore new teaching strategies, and stay up-to-date with educational advancements. By investing in their professional growth, teachers can improve student outcomes, foster innovation, and maintain a high standard of education. Teacher only days also strengthen team cohesion, creating a shared vision and ensuring consistency across the school in delivering quality learning experiences. With the added complexity of the changes that are being asked schools to implement these days are essential to ensure that teachers are delivering an equitable and high performing curriculum. I hope you can understand how important these are. If you do have any concerns do not hesitate to contact me.

Student Leadership

“Learning today, leading tomorrow”

This term we begin the process of selecting our student leadership council for 2025. This will be a cohort of Y8 student leaders who have responsibility for providing critical student voice on our school direction. They will represent the student body when required, have responsibility to support our student wellbeing initiatives and have the opportunity to learn key leadership skills.

The process of choosing student leaders at ANI is something we are extremely proud of with so many students showing interest in leadership opportunities. It becomes quite a logistical challenge and is a great learning opportunity for those who apply.

Here is a brief overview of the process. It is subject to some minor changes but in essence, it will go as follows:

Leadership @ ANI Afternoon – Thursday October 31st 2pm – 4pm (Week 3)

Students keen to learn about the process and/or apply for leadership will be invited to an afternoon in the MPS from 2pm – 4pm (parents, please note the 4pm finish). This afternoon will be led by the Senior Leadership Team, key staff who support the student leadership at ANI and some of the current Y8 student leaders. The focus of this afternoon will be to:

  • learn a little about leadership in a broader sense,
  • the opportunity student leadership presents at ANI,
  • the expectations of our student leaders at ANI
  • the process for selecting our 2025 student leadership council
  • leadership/teamwork challenges to allow the potential leaders to showcase and learn some key skills involved in student leadership

Attendance at this event will be recorded to support individual applications.

Student Leadership Application – Week 4

Students keen to apply will complete an application form (google form) before the deadline of Friday (Week 4) @ 3pm. This form will allow students to showcase the motivation behind their application form, share some insights into initiatives they would be passionate to lead as a student leader and detail some opportunities they have been engaged in across their Y7 journey which speak to their leadership capabilities. Each application will also require an endorsement from an ANI teacher which will allow students to have robust conversation with key adults in their homeroom or specialist classrooms.

Shortlisting – Week 5

The student leadership coordinating team will spend a week carefully analysing the applications, the endorsements and seeking feedback from staff members on our wonderful applicants. At the end of this considerable challenge, we will be offering an interview to a shortlist of candidates. The number of shortlisted candidates is not fixed and will be decided based on the applications received. This moment in the process is a key learning opportunity for our aspiring leaders. With limited positions available, we always end up in a position where most of our applicants will not be offered an interview slot and this can be a challenging moment for our students. Naturally, many will be disappointed but it is an opportunity for some growth conversations and a realistic example of application processes they will encounter many times in life.

Shortlist Interviews – Week 6

In week 6, our shortlisted candidates will have the opportunity to interview with staff members from the coordinating team. Details/structure of these interviews will be shared with the shortlisted candidates as far in advance as possible and they will have a short window to prepare for the opportunity to present on their leadership application. This is a wonderful opportunity for our leaders to practice the skills required in an interview and we embrace the nerves that come with this. Having led this process for many years now, I can safely say it is a highlight of the year for all the staff involved and we always leave so proud of the cohort of Y7 students we have.

Student Leadership Council Announcement – Week 7

In week 7, we will announce our leadership council for 2025. Again, another key learning opportunity for our leaders who have been part of the process up until this point. Our community’s support of these leaders will go a long way to ensuring their growth mindset has the opportunity to develop and they learn from this opportunity.

First meeting of the 2025 student leadership council – Week 8

This week, we will arrange our first meeting of the 2025 student leadership council. The focus will be on celebrating their opportunity, goal setting and some team building. Our current leaders will also have the chance to offer their advice and guidance to the new leaders.

End of Term Assembly – Announcing our Council and Head Students – Week 9

At our end-of-year assembly, we will announce our Student council and our Head Students (students from the council) to the Y7 student body. Whānau of council members will be invited to this celebration.

I am so looking forward to this process and hope you are too,

Kieran Gleeson

Deputy Principal

High School Exam Prep

On Wednesday 23rd October in Week 2, Year 8 Students will be completing High School Preparation exams. There are 2 exams, 1 literacy exam and 1 maths exam. These are paper exams completed in silence in the MPS to prepare students for the experience and environment of High School Entrance exams.

Teachers have been preparing students in class by our preparation exams and entrance exams by

– discussing exam strategies and approaches

– practising answering different styles of questions such as cloze, multiple choice, essay and non-verbal reasoning

– advising on how to revise and prepare for an exam.

These are solely for the experience of sitting this style of exam and preparation for High School entrance exams. The results will be shared with students but do not contribute towards reports or teacher judgements.

Revision topics and equipment required are available from classroom teachers.

Reception Reminders

Dear Parents,

We kindly request your assistance in reminding your children that our office is a professional environment and must be treated with the utmost respect at all times. It is essential that all students maintain their best behavior while in this space.

Students should not enter the reception area during school hours unless necessary and must not use it as a place to socialise or skip class.

Additionally, we ask that parents report to reception when signing out students or arranging pick-ups during school hours.

Please plan pickups outside of break times or coordinate with the school in advance to avoid any delays. Classrooms and device cabinets are often locked during breaks, so this helps us ensure your child can retrieve their belongings promptly. When you arrive at reception, provide your child’s name and room number so we can arrange for them to be brought to you. Additionally, please remember to sign your child out of school, as it is crucial for health and safety to know which students have left during the day.

We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining the respect and appropriateness of this space.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Principal Awards

Ki-o-Rahi

ANI celebrated Te wiki o te reo Māori – Māori language week, by learning a traditional Māori game called Ki-o-Rahi. Each team ran an ILE competition. The winning ILE represented that team in our finals played on Monday.

Mātai team won the Year 8 final and Totara won the Year 7 final.

The rest of the school came out to support and it was a beautiful day to be out enjoying a full school sports event before Prize giving.

Thank you to our Te Ao Māori PLG group of teachers for making it happen.

ANI Riti-a-thon Term 4

The overall winner of the ANI Riti-a-thon for Term 3 was Room 6/7. On average, each student in their ILE read for 30 minutes per night. They have well and truly set the standard. Ka pai!

Our Term 4 Riti-a-thon began on Monday and the race is on for the most reading hours for the week (Monday – Monday). Please encourage your tamariki to read rather than watch netflix tonight and they will reap the benefits!

Sustainability

Our garden is thriving, and we are thrilled to share some exciting news! We’ve been fortunate to receive a grant from Bunnings, which will help take our garden to the next level. Next term, a team from Bunnings will be coming out to lend their expertise and support as they work on adding some fantastic new extensions to the garden. We can’t wait to see the improvements unfold, so be sure to keep an eye out for updates—exciting things are on the horizon!

Our bees are also doing exceptionally well. During our most recent inspection, we had the incredible opportunity to witness a special moment—several bees hatching! It was a fascinating and memorable experience for all involved. The bee colony continues to thrive, and we’re looking forward to seeing how it further contributes to the garden’s ecosystem. Stay tuned for more buzzworthy updates!

German Language Competition

Guten Tag and hello,

On 25 September, I attended the Goethe Institute’s prize-giving for the German Language competition that four of my brave German Club students took part in. The prize giving was held at Auckland Uni and even the ambassador of Germany was present to give a speech and hand out some awards.

  • Alexandra (RM10) was the first participant of the night to get up and receive her certificate, she was awarded gold in the category A1.1.
  • Louisa (RM16) was also awarded gold in that category and they both got a German book alongside their certificates.
  • Caroline (RM26) and Mason (RM6) were awarded silver in the same category. Ka rawe, super gemacht!

They all did an amazing job and I couldn’t be prouder of them!

If you see them around, please let them know that ANI is proud of them, too.

Danke 🙂

Visual Arts

Wow what a whirlwind of a term it has been! The Year 7 and 8s have been creating some beautiful pieces of art whilst learning a new skill:  Printmaking!

The Year 8s had a similar brief to last term however they had more flexibility on their choice of animal that related to their country of origin or personal love for that animal. We had some beautiful linocut pandas, a bat, chinese dragons, a whale and a beautiful Kea just to name a few!

The Year 7’s started off looking at kowhaiwhai panels, how to draw the basic patterns and then finished off by creating their own more vibrant interpretations in pastel.
They then got to research a musical instrument they were interested in and look at its history/origin. They then drew their instrument and created a collagraph block from cardboard of their instrument. We used a printing technique using cool or warm colours that we printed onto black paper. They all did such a great job with each print being completely original.

Aims Elective Week

During AIMS week I was lucky enough to run a Handbuilding with Clay workshop where the students learnt how to make a pinch pot and then turned it into any kind of creature they wanted. The students had a blast as did I and we now have some very cute little critters waiting for their firing in the kiln!

I’m looking forward to seeing what gets produced in Term 4! I have plenty of plans brewing.

North Island Waterpolo Champs

At the end of September, ANI sent two teams to compete in the North Island Waterpolo Champs, held all over Auckland. Our two teams were Taniwha, who competed in the A grade and Kākahi, who competed in the C grade.

Team Kākahi had some fierce competition, including St Cuths, Glen Eden and Kowahi. The team finished 5th in their grade!

Team Taniwha was up against some heavyweight water polo schools, including Dio, St Kents and RI. The team had some outstanding wins, including smoking St Peters in their 3rd game 11-5 (redemption from AIMS) and some tough losses. The team finished 7th in their grade. Maybe not the result the team was looking for. However, the team should be very proud of their efforts facing some tough teams.

Myself, Jordan and the coaches are incredibly proud of how our teams played and they gave it their all (as always).

Big ups to the ANI Waterpolo massive

CEO’s Message
Kia ora whānau,
As we move through 2024, I am incredibly proud of the work the Warriors Community Foundation has achieved. Our purpose has always been to create lasting, positive change in the lives of tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau across Aotearoa. This year, we’ve seen our reach and impact grow, with more people engaging in our programmes than ever before.
We’ve continued to build on the pillars of mental health, literacy, and wellbeing, and our programmes like
Tupu Māia, Prepare to Perform and League in Libraries have
been key to ensuring our youth are empowered with the knowledge and support they need. But it’s not just about the numbers. Every interaction, every smile, and every lesson learned in our sessions make a difference in these young lives.
Thank you to all our sponsors!
As we look ahead, I’m excited to see how we can grow even further. Collaboration with partners, including Make-A-Wish, Z Energy’s Good in the Hood, and One Good Kiwi, allows us to extend our reach and make sure the communities that need us most get the support they deserve. These partnerships, alongside your generosity and participation, are the foundation of what we do.
Thank you for standing with us and for being a part of our journey. Together, we’re tackling some of the most pressing social challenge —building healthier, more dent communities. There’s much more to come, and we’re grateful to have you along for the ride.
