The ANI Guild – Issue #6

THE ANI GUILD ISSUE _5 (1)
In today’s ANI Guild we have the following:

ANI Back with a Bang!

Term 3 will be the best one yet. AIMS,  School Production, EPro8, Science Fair, and Tournament Of Minds (TOM) are just some of the things that will be happening this term.

We are very excited to show what we have been working towards this term.

For the past two terms, we have been working on these milestones that’ll be worth the wait. ANI has been a huge part of AIMS for years, and they are excited to send new students every year. Also, ANI has made their own production! Miss Astrella, Miss King and Whaea Tash have been working hard to get their cast in line and ready for the performance in week four. Tournament of Minds is another competition that involves practice and creativity. The students who are involved in these events are very excited to be presenting their hard work.

We will be having the Central Zones Gymnastics as well as Kids Sing. Unfortunately, AIMS is the same week as Kids Sing, so some of the students will not be able to attend. But even though those kids will not be able to attend, they have been practising with their fellow choir members every Thursday and are helping them get stronger, as it prepares them for the competition. Central Zones Gymnastics is another one of ANI’s events that students will be attending. While they are doing their flips and tricks, they will be representing the school as well.

At ANI, we love to represent our school at many different competitions and events and this term with our production. This term might be the best one of the year.

Behind The Scenes: Production

What Is Production?

Production has many meanings, but our school production is not one to forget. Production is a written script coming to life in real time. In our case, ANI students will act and perform as a selected role in front of a massive crowd. So many people throughout our school come together to perform a phenomenal performance for our entertainment. They get about a few days per week to practise, rehearse and prepare for their big moment.

Casts

Of course, we can’t forget about the cast. The cast, or actors, do the most important part of the whole production, and that is acting and bringing the story to life. They work hard to memorise long lines, practise important scenes, and work side by side with their fellow cast members. There are many roles in the cast, ranging from the Shadow of Chaos to the Dean.        Fun Fact: Did you know more than 60 people signed up to be part of the cast?

Who and What Is Backstage?

Backstage is an important group of people who work hard while cast members give it their all on stage. They manage the backstage, control the AV as well as lighting, make props for actors and apply make-up. There are currently a select few students who are managing behind the scenes. They need to be responsible, organised, able to work well with their peers and follow given instructions. The students who were selected for backstage are assisting people and trying their best to make a good show alongside their peers.

Singing and Musicians Crew

A fantastic crew of students who are singing and presenting an awesome musical performance will be there on both production days. They practice twice a week to make fabulous and awesome music for the audience and the cast. There will be an awesome performance of their music, which is really thrilling. The teachers who are in charge of this crew are, of course, our wonderful Ms Olivia and Ms King.

Props

There is also a magnificent group of students working hard to prepare and make props with their very own hands! The 2 teachers in charge of this group are Ms Purchase and Mr Ng. With the help of these 2 teachers and a handful of students, the props are looking extremely creative. Using the supplies in the visual art room, where everything you need is found, the props have come together in a high-quality sight.

Who Is In Charge Of Production?

Our wonderful Ms Astrella and Ms King are the leaders of this production, with many other teachers working alongside. Ms Astrella and Ms King select the students who are acting for the production. They have quite a busy schedule with rehearsals 2 times per week, mainly on Monday and Friday. Our cast, backstage and teachers are working really hard to make a fantastic production for the audience.

Ready, Set, Think!!

Week one of term three, the six-week period of Tournament of Minds preparation has started.

Our school’s teams have chosen their topics, so they are spending every spare second they get, meaning skipping their break time and working on their challenge with so much commitment.

The four topics are Social Sciences, Language Literature, STEM and The Arts. Team 2 has chosen STEM, and Team 1 has chosen the Arts. This year’s challenges were very interesting and different from the past years; for example, normally for language literature, it requires something to do with books (like last year they needed a book by Shuan Tan), but this year it’s completely different.

It has been very hard to decide what challenge to do. When you think about it, 6 weeks is not a long time to make a script, memorise that script, make props, sets, and costumes, and you only have 1 and a half hours every day. Not being allowed to talk about the challenge is one of the hardest parts. You have to shut down everything around you just to work on your challenge. You have to use only the allowable materials, and you have to use two presentation skills.

Both Team 1 and 2 have kicked off with a great start, having meetings to plan their solutions to their challenge. They have started their script and are already stressing about what to write! While the other members who are not writing the script are busy building the ideas and making their thoughts into a creative design. But again, they have to be careful because anything they use that’s not on the allowable materials list, BOOM!

The tournament day is on the 29th of August at Diocesan School for Girls. 2 Weeks have already passed, so only 4 weeks left.  The teams have to hurry to make the performance great. Good Luck to Team 1 and 2!!

Math, Math and more Math!

On Thursday the 23rd of July, the ANI Mathex trials took place.

It started off with Year 7 students dashing to get their questions. With 4 people in each team and one being the runner, it was tense and exhilarating for both the audience and competitors. Even though it was a tight competition, the students who participated gave their best effort and were determined to give it their all. It ended with one team completing all the questions.

Afterwards, it was the Year 8s’ turn. It began with the MPS booming through cheers and encouragement. The groups stumbled to get their questions, nervous and chaotic. The timer began to display; it was a race against time. In the end, they successfully finished most of the math problems.

Almost all the groups got close to the halfway point, and that was incredible to see. Everyone’s dedication was noticeable and they definitely showed how keen they were for this opportunity to showcase their skills in this complex subject. We would like to congratulate everyone who went to the trials!

And a special congratulations to the top 2 Year 7 Teams: YingYangNaoki, Niranjan, Luke, and Leo; and The Incredible Chicken NuggetsHannah, Declan, Tingting, and Nina! Then the Top 2 Year 8 Teams: Smooth MathematiciansJordan, Evan, Lucas and Brooklyn; and PinguBen, Noah, Ted, Zackary!

The Grammar Boys Perform in Style!

On Friday 24th July, the Auckland Boys Grammar School came to ANI to perform.

They brought all their orchestras and musical ensembles to perform in front of our school. One of the songs that they played was written by a Kiwi composer, which was about the sounds of New Zealand. Their performance was breathtaking and left the whole school in awe. They had a wide variety of different instruments, including woodwind, brass, strings, drums, and even triangles! The songs they played really inspired the students. They almost made us all fall asleep with the grace and clarity of their playing.

Their melodies filled the MPS with beautiful harmonies. Some of the songs were about beauty and calmness, but some of the songs sounded like anger and rage. One of their ensembles was their rock band, and they played with the intention to get the crowd excited. Another one of their groups was the Scottish bagpipes that started the show with their loud and talented performance. The all-boys choir was filled with both soprano and alto singers and had great harmonies within the piece.

Most of ANI’s favourite piece was the last performance. It was an upbeat jazz piece with all sorts of instruments from trombone to electric guitar and even a drum! Ka Pai Auckland Grammar School! We hope that you will come again soon!
