Principal’s News

Principal’s Awards
Congratulations to Norah Anderson (Room 15), Joshna Baskar (Room 15), Amelia Meade (Room 19), Oshani Mudannayaka (Room 19), Harriet Laughton (Room 19) and Drishti Murara (Room 19) for displaying exceptionally high levels of competence when searching and connecting Science research. Their presentations were highly engaging and they communicated their findings with accuracy.

Community Feedback
At this time of the year we ask parents to take a few minutes to complete a short online survey to tell us how we are doing. Your feedback is very important to us as it influences the future direction of ANI and assists us to make changes that will improve the school. If you could spend ten minutes filling in the survey, please click here.  If you would prefer to speak to a member of the Senior Leadership Team and provide this information personally please don’t hesitate to make contact by clicking here.

End of Year Reports
The end of year reports will be distributed to students on Monday 14 December. If for some reason your son/daughter will not be at school on this date, please advise the class teacher so we can forward it to you via post. Unfortunately we are unable to provide the report any earlier than this date due to turn around times with our printer.

School Camp
In 2016 the Year 8’s will be heading to Tui Ridge in Rotorua for their annual camp. Each camp includes a team of six classes. The first group head off from 4 – 8 April followed by the second group from 11 – 15 April. Over the course of the five days and four nights the students get to experience a wide range of activities; rock climbing, abseiling, mountain biking, the giant swing, high ropes and the flying fox. In addition to this, each student spends an evening in the bush on an overnight experience in a tent.  These activities build on the Year 7 EOTC programme and expand on the range of activities they experienced in 2015. They are a great way for students to develop relationships with students and staff. We can confirm that the cost for the Year 8 2016 camp is going to be $370.00

Cultural Leadership
It has been a privilege this year to watch our young Maori and Pasifika students develop as leaders. Under the nurturing guidance of team leader Megan Hughes and Kapa Haka tutors Matua Ben and Matua Dan these students have been encouraged to embrace their culture, achieve success and feel comfortable at school. As role models they have benefited from participating in a range of challenges and activities and have met each one with confidence, enthusiasm and passion. I congratulate each of them on the profile they have developed  and their success. We all look forward to seeing them perform later in the year. Well done Jaylen Rodwell, Terewai Majurey, AJ Tapsell and Nia Cherrington-Thomas.

Have a great week.

Jill Farquharson

Coaching Symposium

Last Friday 13 November a group of 10 student coaches from ANI presented the very first Coaching Symposium at Waipuna Lodge.

The group left ANI with a buzz of excitement and nerves knowing that they had to present what they had been learning and implementing over the last year as a student coach, to a large audience of adults.

The day started with a couple of key note speakers such as Dr Christian van Nieuwerburg and John Campbell.  Some key ideas from their workshop included:

  • What inspired them to be a coach and write a book,
  • Sharing current research into coaching and the effects on future generations

After a delightful morning tea we presented to an audience of 50 educators who wanted to know about our school perspective on students coaching students and the cool things we are doing at ANI. Everyone had a turn at speaking with five students focusing on our school coaching process and how this developed for us over the year.

A highlight for us was the ANI students actually coaching the adults and showing how powerful this type of learning and form of collaboration and communication is effective not only for coaching but in our daily lives.

We all had a great day and are looking forward to working with John Campbell as he suggested we could share our story at a future conference in Sydney (hopefully!).

What an amazing day for us.

Sports News

Central Zone Badminton
Auckland Normal Intermediate attended the Central Zone Badminton competition on Wednesday 11 November at Gillies Avenue Badminton Hall.  ANI had a very strong team with students selected from Year 7 and Year 8 for both singles and doubles. The students started the day with pool play and then completed with players crossing over for semi-finals and finals. The players all performed to a very high standard and are to be commended on their general play and high level of skill. Out of the total of 8 finals that were played Auckland Normal had teams in four.  We would like to thank all players and Holly Brock for her management of the team.

Thursday 26 November, 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Drinks and lollies and glow sticks available to purchase.
The PTA and Teachers are planning a fun evening full of music, entertainment and dance for the students.

All children must be collected at 8:30pm from inside the SCHOOL HALL. No child will be allowed to leave the hall or walk to a carpark without a parent. We would appreciate prompt pick up.

Please note:  We need a signed permission slip and $6.00 to admit your child to the hall. Permission slips have been sent home this week. Click here to download a permission slip.

PTA Update

PTA meeting on Monday 23 November in the library 7:00pm – all welcome.

This will be the last PTA meeting for the year. We would welcome new parents to come on the evening. ANI has had a very strong running PTA for the last eight years and has held very successful fundraising events, Chocolate fundraiser, Nigel Latta evening,  evening socials and PTA mufti days/week.

Funds raised from these events have been donated back to the school for additional resources and items that may not have otherwise been covered by the Ministry of Education funding.

This has been made possible by the generous support from the parent community and students from ANI – thank you.

There will be an update shortly showing the overall amount raised from PTA fundraising events and what has been purchased.

If you would like to find out more information about the PTA, please feel free to contact me by clicking here. We do need more parents to join the PTA for 2016.

PTA Chair

Year 7 Placement Tests

Placement tests have already been held at local schools for fully enrolled Year 7 students starting in 2016. There will be a final placement test at ANI on Friday 4 December at 9:00am for any students that have just enrolled or missed out on completing the test at their own school. Students will need to bring a pen or pencil with them.
