Auckland Normal Intermediate

Term 4, Week 4 2015

Acting Principal’s News
What a fantastic result for the NZ All Blacks!

What we saw at the weekend was a well-deserved outcome for the All Blacks and for all of those hours and hours of hard work from the players not to mention the coaches, managers, support staff and their families that make the All Blacks the 2015 Rugby World Cup Champions!

With only six weeks left of school I would like to encourage our students to remain focused in their learning and continue to make positive decisions before moving into Year 8 or onto high school.

With this in mind I have a couple of reminders for students:

  • Wear the correct uniform and hats (if there is an issue let your teacher know)
  • Ensure that you are making safe and smart decisions when arriving and leaving school, especially around busy roads/intersections (look before your proceed)
  • Remind your parents to drop you off outside the school gate not inside the school car parks, as this can become a hazard in any weather

Students Coaching Students
A small group of students have been asked to represent the school at a Coaching Symposium at the Waipuna Convention Centre on Friday 13 November.  They have been asked to talk to a large group of adults about how we have implemented the student coaching programme at ANI.

These students have also been invited to Murray’s Bay Intermediate to train some of their students on how to be an effective coach.

The students are very excited about being provided with these opportunities this is a great accolade not only for the school but the students who will present at these events.

V8 Super Cars
The ‘Students on Track’ initiative has yet again been provided to our students to attend the Friday practise day at Pukekhoe race track.  The students have been drawn out of a ballot and 30 will attend the day on Friday 6 November.

The day will entail students interacting with NZ and Australian drivers from the V8 Super Cars to the support car categories such as NZ Muscle cars and the Toyota 86’s.

Students will have the opportunity to see the cars up close and watch what it takes to have a V8 Super Car. This will be a great experience for those lucky enough to be part of the action.

PTA Mufti Week
A reminder that we have our PTA mufti week next week. Students have several options one being not to wear mufti at all or three other options if they choose to get involved, as follows:

RED Day Pass $2.00
BLUE Week Pass $5.00
PINK* Extra Pass $5.00

*Pink Pass: This is in addition to the week or day pass and allows students to wear jewellery, nail polish and hair colour.

Meet a Teacher Afternoon
On Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 November from 3:30pm – 6:30pm, we are hosting Year 6 students and their parents. They will meet a teacher to discuss their unique learning attributes.  If you have a child who is currently in year 6 we look forward to meeting you.

Have a great week.

Environmental Group Update – School Garden

One of the enviro group focuses has been establishing a school veggie garden where we grow seasonal vegetables to use in the food technology specialist area.

So far we have planted baby carrots, corn, strawberries, rhubarb, beans , peas , beetroot and potatoes. Every Friday we have a gardening session with Mike (the school gardener) which is open to all students to experience a variety of gardening skills and knowledge. Last Friday we picked our first harvest of rhubarb which we cooked and ate  for morning tea. We also harvested baby carrots, snap peas and beetroot. We hope to plant many more fruit and vegetables in the future.

Treemendous Makeover
At the end of term three, ANI entered a competition to win a Treemendous School Makeover worth $10,000. We were very successful in the first cut and placed in the top 11 out of 65 schools in NZ. This meant we had to move on to the final stage of the application.

Last Friday, 30 October, a qualified landscaper named Murray Reid from ‘Reid Landscape and Design’ came to our school and we showed him our vision of the chosen ‘makeover’ outdoor area. He then went away and drew our ideas into a professional plan for free. We are also working in collaboration with the Student Agency Team as they have a greater understanding of the vision of our school.

After sending off our final application we are patiently waiting to hear back from the people who run the competition to see if we were successful. This should be on the 12th November 2015.

We would like to thank Murray Reid for donating his free design service to the school and would recommend to parents if you require any landscaping design ideas or are thinking of re developing your outdoor areas why not contact Murray Reid from ‘Reid Landscape and Design’ by clicking here.

‘The Great ANI Quiz’

Each year the Student Agency Group organise a fundraising initiative to raise money for student resources. This year students are invited to take part in the ‘Great ANI Quiz’. Quiz questions were sent home last Friday 30 October for the students to learn before the test date on Friday 13 November. During this time students are asked to get as many sponsors as possible so they can raise money for resources.

The quiz will benefit our students in three ways:

1.   They will be consolidating their learning in 2015 in a fun and engaging way
2.   Enlisting sponsors will support the school to purchase student resources
3.   Students who get behind this initiative will be rewarded for their effort e.g. spot prizes, class pizza lunch

We appreciate your support in advance and we look forward to our students achieving 100% in the quiz.

Sports News

Water Polo
Two ANI water polo teams competed in Year 7 and 8 North Island Championships held in Auckland from 30 October – 1 November. This was an amazing opportunity for our players to compete against teams all over the North Island and to further develop their water polo skills. Both teams represented the school with pride and showed great sportsmanship and team play. ANI Sharks finished 6th place and the ANI Dolphins 16th. Well done to all players involved.

2015 Library Stocktake

As the year draws to a close, our library will be doing a stocktake of resources and library books. We would appreciate if students and parents could please have a look around the house, under beds and behind sofas to ferret out any school library books and return them to the school library before Friday 13 November.
