We are delighted to share some special news, our Deputy Principal Mrs Lucy Naylor has become a Principal. Last week she won the position of Principal at Stanley Bay Primary School on the North Shore. An outstanding achievement and we wish her all the very best in this new role. Her start date is 7 August so we will be having a farewell assembly on 4 August. You are most welcome to join us.
We have recently appointed two new staff members to commence in term three. Mrs Gemma Doran a New Zealand trained teacher joins us after a number of years teaching overseas. She replaces Mr Sam Guthrie who is heading off to do his OE at the end of term two.
We also welcome Mr Andrew Yiallouros an experienced teacher from the UK who is a specialist trained technology teacher. Andrew joins us on 16 June and will be teaching in both hard materials and soft materials. He replaces Mariee Guinibert who is moving to part time employment and for family reasons.
A big thank you to Sam and Mariee from the ANI students, staff and community for your contributions.
Each month I congratulate students receive a Principal’s Award. These students are nominated by their teachers for exceptional work or effort over and above what is expected. They receive a certificate from me, have their name published in the newsletter and a photo goes on our facebook page.
Two principal’s certificates result in a badge and two badges result in a Principal’s shield. I really enjoy handing these out and nothing makes the senior leadership team happier than acknowledging good performance and positive results.
Congratulations Zane Gordon (Room 19), for his ‘Who We Are’ inquiry on ‘How the Brain Works’.
Congratulations Tala Dwyer, Amy Keating and Isobel Allan (Room 11) for presenting an engaging inquiry which allowed the audience to have a taste of the Italian culture, values and traditions while explaining the connections between Italy and the rest of the world.
School assemblies happen every Friday unless there is a whole school event like Cross Country taking place. Each team is responsible for sharing interesting items of learning and twice a term we have a singing assembly. In the last week of term we have a more formal assembly called an awards assembly. Two students per class are recognised for outstanding achievement and they receive a certificate. Specialist teachers also award two certificates per year group. You are most welcome to join us for any of these fun filled occasions.

Community of Learning – What’s been happening lately?
One of the achievement challenges for all eleven schools in our Community of Learning (COL) is around parent/community participation and engagement. We want to extend the interactions our community members have with each other whether they be local businesses, parents, families or boards of trustees. An excellent opportunity was captured recently when boards members from our local schools gathered at ANI to discuss ways of connecting and working together. An excellent example of true community collaboration and purposeful engagement.
A reminder to students and families that wearing the proper school uniform to and from school is one of our school rules. Students (unless attending a SCHOOL sports practice) must not come to school or go home in PE uniform. The correct footwear must also be worn including the correct socks. If you are unsure of uniform requirements please visit our website for details. We will be on duty before and after school checking the students.
After School Drop-in Learning Centre
A big thanks to the number of staff who every Tuesday and Thursday offer an after school drop-in service where our priority students get extra support with their learning. This is a great opportunity for some one-on-one support and positive engagement with one of our teachers. Thanks to the following staff for offering this regular support to our students, Megan Hughes, Betty Tafa, and Danni Cook.
As part of our work on wellness we are discussing and exploring ways to develop coping strategies and resilience in our students. Here is an interesting article with a very good (and relevant) message.
“Helping Children Cope
Resilience in the face of adversity isn’t a fixed personality trait. Resilience is an ability we can help children build. This is an important fact for children who suffer from a serious illness or experience a grievous loss or setback.
What are the best ways that parents can support traumatised children?
- Tell them they are loved and are not alone. Children need to hear this over and over again.
- Show them that they matter. This is the question children ask as they grow up: Do I make a difference to others? Do other people notice me, care about me and rely on me? When young people think that they don’t matter, they’re more likely to engage in self-destructive and antisocial activities, or simply withdraw.
- Companionship. Parents and other adults can make a difference simply by walking alongside troubled children and listening with undivided attention, forming warm relationships, communicating openly and allowing children to talk about their thoughts and fears.
- Discuss coping mechanisms. These can include understanding that:
- It’s okay to be sad and take a break from any activity and cry.
- It’s okay to be happy and laugh.
- It’s okay to be angry and jealous of friends and relatives who are not suffering.
- It’s okay to say to anyone that we do not want to talk about it now.
- It’s okay to ask for help.
- Establish positive rituals. This could be something like a family dinnertime practice of each person sharing the best and worst moments of the day – the things that made them sad and those that made them grateful.
- Embrace family history. Having a sense of their roots builds children’s sense of mattering, of being connected to something larger than themselves. This includes knowing where their parents and grandparents grew up, what their childhoods were like and how the family fared in good times and bad.

To support student wellbeing we are introducing a morning yoga session for students.
Yoga will be held in the Performing Arts Room, 8:00am to 8:45am, every Tuesday morning beginning on Tuesday 13 June. No experience is necessary and all students are welcome.
The sessions will be taken by Edit Horvath from Professional Yoga https://professionalyoga.net/. Edit is a highly experienced Yoga Teacher who teaches hatha yoga, the most commonly practised yoga style, which combines 3 elements: physical poses; controlled breathing; and a period of deep relaxation or meditation. Edit is based at Professional Yoga where they believe in in safe and sustainable yoga practice.
Students will need to wear their PE uniform and bring a warm layer to wear during relaxation. The cost of the yoga sessions will be covered by the school.

Parent Forum – Assessment
Wednesday 14 June, 6:00pm – 7:00pm, Information Centre
You are invited to attend a Parent Assessment Evening on Wednesday 14 June. The purpose of the evening is to explain the assessment practices and processes teachers use to determine your child’s progress towards the end of year National Standards.
Assessment and Reporting
As part of reporting to parents, on Monday 3 July your child will bring home their mid-year report which shows progress toward the end of year National Standard in reading, writing and mathematics.
National standards are the level of achievement that students are expected to meet at the end of each academic year. The mid-year report will show you the progress your child has made towards this end of year standard.
To determine your child’s progress against the National Standard teachers make an overall teacher judgement by gathering a range of evidence from many sources.
These could include;
- Observing the process a student uses to complete a learning task
- Conversing with the student to find out what they know, understand and can do
- Gathering results from formal assessment including standardised tools such as e-asTTle or PAT’s.
Teachers and students work together to gather evidence and then collaboratively review the information and then teachers use this to make an overall judgement in relation to National Standards. We use a collaborative approach which supports students to lead their own learning and take ownership of their progress.

As part of our mid-year reporting process we will be holding triadic interviews over two afternoons/evenings;
- Wednesday 26 July (3:30pm – 6:30pm)
- Thursday 27 July (1:30pm – 4:00pm)
Throughout terms one and two students have had the opportunity to reflect on their learning. The triadic interviews are a time for students to share with you their successes, the progress that they are making towards their learning goals and what their goals are for the reminder of the year. This is a great opportunity for you to talk about your child’s learning.
Throughout the triadic interviews specialist teachers are also available and form a vital part of the students learning programme. When booking a time to see the class teacher you re also able to book in with one of the specialist teachers and find out a more about your child’s learning
Please note that on Thursday 27 July from 1.30, we will have no supervision at school as all the teachers will be involved in the interviews. Please make arrangements for your son/daughter so they can leave school safely at 12:30pm.

PTA Year 7 & 8 Social

The PTA are planning a fun evening full of music, entertainment and dance for the students.
Permission slips were sent home on Wednesday 31 May and these must be completed and sent with your child on the night of the social with the $6.00 entry fee – door sales only.
All children must be collected at 8:30pm from inside the SCHOOL HALL. No child will be allowed to leave the hall or walk to the car park without a parent. We would appreciate prompt pick up.
Please note: We need a signed permission slip and $6.00 to admit your child to the hall.

2017 School Production
This year our school production is ‘Disney’s High School Musical JR’. Performance dates are Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 June, 6:30pm – 8:15pm with a matinee for local primary schools on Tuesday 27 June at 1:00pm.
Tickets are $5.00 each (cash only, no door sales) and will be sold at reception from Monday 12 June. There are limited tickets so get in quick or you might miss out seeing this amazing show.
The students have been working hard since the beginning of term two and we are looking forward to sharing a great performance with you.
Please note that students in the show will not be released unless they are collected from the hall by an adult.

After School Music & Leisure Classes
The ANI After School Music & Leisure Programme is open to all students who are attending Primary and Intermediate School and are aged between 6-13 years. Connecting with the Past
We have recently discovered that one of our current year 7 students, Libby Paterson, has had a connection to the school that she was unaware of until now.
Libby was very excited to find out that one of her past relatives actually opened ANI school back in 1945. She has since talked to many of her relatives and has found out a lot more information about her Whakapapa.
Libby comments “My great great grandfather was William James Campbell. William was part of the Ministry of Education NZ from 1921-1944 and was chairman for 6 years. Our main hall is now named after him and it is called the Campbell Hall. – Libby.P”

It is great to have these stories come to light and I encourage other people to share their stories if you have had a past connection to the school.
Safety at the school gate
With the weather starting to turn and winter on its way it is a good time to remind parents to be aware of our students around the school gates and on the way to school. For parents who are dropping off children in cars please be sure to drop off at the school’s gates on Poronui and Disraeli Streets and not drive into the car parks as this will cause traffic congestion and potential H&S concerns.
International Student Home-Stay Host Required
We are looking for two home-stay hosts for two new Chinese students who are starting with us in term 3. Both of these students require a homestay for two terms until the end of this year. Hosting an international student is an amazing cultural experience for the host family and the student.
Our current international home-stay rate is $260 per week. This is paid to the host by the parents of the student.
