Kia ora! I’m Whaea Candice. Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, I moved to New Zealand at 18. My journey into education wasn’t immediate—I first pursued a degree in English and Politics before spending several years in the fast-paced world of hospitality. From the streets of London and Dublin to New Zealand, I developed a deep appreciation for people, diversity, and learning.
My experiences in hospitality ignited a passion for connection, which naturally led me to education. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working in various Auckland schools, supporting learners from diverse backgrounds. As a neurodiverse learner myself, I’m a strong advocate for recognizing and celebrating individual strengths. Nothing brings me greater joy than empowering students to reach their full potential.
Outside of work, I cherish time with my whānau and often visit Whangaparāoa to connect with family. At home, I’m kept on my toes by my 2 ginger cats Honey Puff and Rascal. I’m an avid reader and audiobook enthusiast, especially enjoying Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series and Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. Theatre and musicals have also been lifelong passions of mine.
