A sketch is a rapidly executed freehand drawing that is not usually intended as a finished work.
A sketch may serve a number of purposes: it might record something that the artist sees, it might record or develop an idea for later use or it might be used as a quick way of graphically demonstrating an image, idea or principle.
This class will be looking at the art of sketching – moving outside of the classroom and photographic references, students will be afforded the opportunity to sketch the environment around them; buildings, plant-life and people. This will develop the artistic skills of the student – also highlighting the importance of equipment, form, shading and perspective. Moving through a variety of mediums – pencil, ink pen and watercolor and a variety of techniques to improve sketching (as both a skill in itself, and as a part of a body of artistic skill).
There will be reflection processes used in order to bring about learning – by the end of the term, students will have collected a good amount of work that can be used as reference in the future.
