We will introduce her to the students when she starts and explain the process to them about how they book in and see Emma. Emma will also be available for whanau later in the term so if the school can support you to get through some tough times please reach out.

ANI Trips Expo 2023

This year at ANI are proud to offer three overseas travel opportunities (Cairns, Singapore and Japan).

How can my child sign up for a school trip?

Please click on the following link to send an expression of interest.

When will the trips take place?

The trips will depart Auckland during mid to late September 2022 (TBC). However, depending on the number of students who sign up for each trip these dates may change due to factors out of the schools’ control. If dates do need to change parents and students will be the first to know.

When is the parent evening, so I can learn more?

We have set aside Thursday 25 May at 6pm for a meeting in the school library so parents can be better informed of each trip and what the package will include.

What will each trip cost?

Each trip has an estimated cost attached to it but until we secure flights, accommodation and activities we will not know the final cost. The travel agent has given a price range to work within which is also dependent on currency fluctuations and minimum numbers of students who are travelling to each destination. These cost estimates are provided below for each trip.

Parents will know, as soon as the school knows, the final cost for each trip that has the green light. (This means getting minimum numbers for each trip, from 12-14 students)

Progress payments and a schedule of payment dates will be finalised once a trip gets the green light. Final payments will be due 60 days before departure.

How do I know if the trip will go ahead?

The costs are based on minimum numbers for each destination. These numbers are based on a minimum of 12 – 14 students for each trip. This means students pay their deposit of $300, to secure a spot on the trip they have chosen.

If the trip does not have enough numbers, the school will contact the parents and students to ask if they have a second destination in mind and transfer them to a trip that has the correct minimum numbers. You can also indicate that you would like to go on another trip on the student application form you hand in.

Do we fundraise for the trips?

If you have paid a deposit and the trip has the correct numbers attending the group will not fundraise together but students in the past have done their own fundraising with their whanau to raise the funds. Unfortunately, there are no scholarships for any trips.

So what do I do now?

Families need to choose a trip that best suits their child’s needs / that they are interested in. You will need to fill in the travel form, to secure a trip spot and pay a $300 (non-refundable) deposit, no later than 10 June at 3pm.  Payments can be made online or paid in the office.

The trip destinations for students to choose from in 2023 are:

CAIRNS (Australia)

  • This trip will provide an opportunity to experience the Tropical Rainforests and Coral Reefs of Northern Queensland.
  • Approximate Cost: NZ$2899 – $3299
  • Dates for the trip: Saturday 16 – Thursday 21 September (6 Days)
  • Cairns travel form

SINGAPORE

  • This trip will provide an experience to explore Singapore and local attractions. (Universal Studios, Underground subway transfers, Night Zoo, Science Museum)
  • Approximate Cost: NZ$5470 – $5900
  • Dates for the trip: Saturday 16 – Thursday 21 September (6 Days)
  • Singapore travel form

JAPAN

  • This trip will explore a foreign language-speaking country and give our students opportunities to enhance what they have learnt in Japanese language classes at ANI before they leave.
  • Approximate Cost: NZ$5500 – $6100
  • Dates for the trip: Saturday 16 – Friday 22 September (7 Days)
  • Japan travel form

ANI Careers Week

In Week 4 of Term 2, (Monday 15th – Friday 19th May) ANI will be having our annual Careers Week!

We will be looking at many aspects of the world of work including finding how our interests and passions can transfer into jobs, writing CVs and learning from experts. That’s where you come in! We would like members of our community to speak to our young people about their work in order to share their expertise and experience. This could include the path you took to this job, what it involves today and some special highlights.

If you would like to come to speak to our tamariki about your work experience, please let us know! It can take the form of a live presentation, a zoom call or a pre-recording.

Please complete this form to let us know you are interested, times that work for you.

ANI Breakfast Club

As we shared last term, we are excited to be starting our school breakfast club. This will take place in the food tech room (hub 2) on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The first day it will start will be Tuesday 2nd of May, Week 2. We understand the ever-changing financial times and we are all in different situations.

This service is to be utilised by all so please, if you feel like your young person could benefit from this, send them along! It’s free and sponsored by Sanitarium and Fonterra who provide Weetbix and milk. If by chance there is anyone out there that has connections in the breakfast industry and would like to donate or help out, please reach out. It would be greatly appreciated.

If you have questions or want to discuss anything in more detail, email Mr Houston at nhouston@ani.school.nz

New Pedestrian Crossing

ANI is very happy to share that the new pedestrian crossing on Disraeli Road has been built over the term 1 break! There are still a few aspects that need to be completed but it is ready to be used. This will improve the safety of our students travelling to school and the community travelling around Mount Eden.

Please be aware of the new yellow lines and waiting areas if you collect or drop off your child on Disraeli Street.

As a reminder, please do not park in the University of Auckland driveways, the yellow lines outside the school gates on Poronui Street or in the rear school car park off Disraeli Street.

Discuss with your young person a suitable place to meet a short walk away from the school such as the parking by Melville Park or Essex Reserve.

End of Term 1 Assembly

It is one of the most exciting times of the term when teachers are able to acknowledge our outstanding students.

The parents of students who will be getting a certificate will receive an email from the school and invite you to the event which is happening on Wednesday 3 May at 9:30am.

If you are one of the lucky parents and are able to make it at this time we ask that you don’t let your young child know and keep it a surprise on the day. If you are unable to attend please let the school know, via a reply email.

We look forward to seeing our parent community this Wednesday.

Sports

ANI SKI TEAM TRIALS

If your child would like to trial for the 2023 ANI Ski team with the opportunity to represent our school at the North Island Primary School Ski Championships please read on.

At the moment we are not sure if the North Island Primary School Ski Championships will be taking place but we have entered a team into the SnowPlanet Schools Competition in August. When and if the NIPS competition takes place, we will also be taking two teams of 5 to this event. This is normally after the AIM’s games but we will wait and see if this is an option in 2023.

I have organised Wednesday 17 May for the first ANI Ski team trials. The students will leave school at 10:30am, meeting in the library, in order to get to Snowplanet and prepare themselves for their first timed ski trial. We intend to return to school before 3:00pm but this will have to be a flexible time arrangement (due to traffic/weather) and if we are running late we will contact you.

The cost for the trial will be $60.00 paid by Friday 12 May. This cost includes paying for 1½ hours on the slope between 12:00 pm to 1:30pm, race track configuration, digital timing equipment and 1½ hours with a race Instructor/Coach. The coach will be teaching correct race lines, how to navigate around racing gates and provide advice in order to make our students learn the correct race techniques.

Students are required to bring their own ski clothing, skis, poles, goggles and helmets – (compulsory). Students’ ski gear can be stored in the SLT office on the day of the trial. If required, students can hire their own skis, poles and boots for $25.00 per session (2022 prices), jacket and pants $19 and gloves $10, this will be additional to the $55 and at their own cost. (Helmets are compulsory on the snow – $6 to hire).

We will be travelling to Snowplanet using the school van and may also require parents to provide private transport to and from the trial. Mr Devery will contact parents directly to ask to take transport on the day.

Students will race against the clock through a course using gates to simulate real race conditions. The 15 fastest skiers will make it through to the additional 6 training sessions, so they can prepare themselves for the forthcoming competitions. (TBC)

The approximate cost for the 6 training sessions will be $360, if your child makes the ANI training team.

If there are any questions please contact me at school at sdevery@ani.school.nz

NETBALL

The Netball season is finally here, yay! All teams should have received emails over the school holidays from either Maddy, Nick or your coach/manager to arrange your training time.

A couple of reminders from us:

Your young person should have received their uniform by the end of Week 1, but if they don’t please get them to email Nick (room 6) and Maddy (room 25).

– First grading game is Monday 1st May (time TBC but will be either 4:15pm, 5:15pm or 6:15pm).

– Training is compulsory. Your coaches have sacrificed their own time to be there, so it is important that your young person attends (unless previously communicated).

– Each team will need to have a designated person on the sideline who is responsible for scoring. Nick and Maddy will provide a unique scoring code that will need to be entered each game.

– If you are a coach and haven’t already collected your gear bag, please email Maddy and Nick to arrange a collecting time.

– More information about CentralZones and AIMS will come out once the season is underway.

We are also aware that we have heaps of students displaying qualities of a risk-taker and who are playing Netball for the first time, here are a bunch of links to videos and beginner’s guides for your reference.

Netball Smart Resources – a great programme for injury prevention.

YouTube tutorial – explains rules at a very basic level

Silver Ferns vs Australia game – for inspiration!

We can’t wait to get the season underway and see all our tamariki out on the Netball court.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact the netball co-ordinators:

Maddy Mitchell (mmitchell@ani.school.nz) and Nick Houston (nhouston@ani.school.nz)

PTA News

The 2023 fundraising year has started well, with both Mufti Week and the Social proving to be big successes! Thank you to all the parents and teachers who have helped with both events to date.

We have our Chocolate fundraising assembly on Monday 8th May at the school. This is an important part of what we as the PTA do, and a significant contributor to our fundraising efforts. Last year this event was the most successful we had ever had at ANI, and easily our most successful Chocolates event.

At the assembly, we will outline what students will need to do to earn prizes, fundraising badges etc. A FAQ list will be distributed following the assembly to assist parents with understanding how they can best help their young people and the PTA with this activity.

Which leads me to our next challenge!

WE NEED YOU! Yes parents, we really need you! Anyone who is able to volunteer to assist the PTA with the collection of money as well as the recording of information related to student names and payments – we would greatly appreciate your involvement.

Currently, we have two parents from last year’s group on board and some active volunteers. We need more hands on deck, whether you can help regularly with this and other events, or whether you can be a “Friend of the PTA”, we’d welcome you with open arms!

Our next meeting is Monday 1st May at 6:pm in the school library. This will be a Wine and Cheese evening combined with our standard PTA meeting. Please come along – we would love to have you on board with us in 2023 as we aim to fund as many projects as possible!
